about
Drug of choice was written amidst the hot days of early summer of 2020. I was graduating high school, in the process of moving out of my childhood home, and in a pretty unstable place looking towards my future [thanks COVID-19]. In what was expected to be an exciting entrance into the “real world”, I found myself wrapped up in feelings of doubt and a steep absence of motivation. Drug of Choice is about how attention and praise (especially through the trick mirror of the internet) can temporarily satisfy the yearning for deeper fulfillment, distracting us from what really matters.
lyrics
It’s muggy and warm
I don’t want to go outside
So I’ll sweep the floors
Do something that makes me feel productive
And I'll just ignore
Everything that has at least a little weight in my life
‘Cause it’s too much work
To get emotionally
Invested in
Something I could possibly fuck up
I’m beginning to feel like lack of sleep
Is my drug of choice
I’m beginning to hear
The words you speak
As just white noise
I’m beginning to notice
That attention is my poison
And when it’s out of my system
I want more
Ohohoh
Took a bike ride to the edge of the valley
I watched the river stir
Standing there thinking
Well just look at me
Doing everything you said I should
To find yourself is a fucking dumb philosophy
When I’m found I’ll be lost for good
For good
For good
I’m beginning to feel like lack of sleep
Is my drug of choice
I’m beginning to hear
The words you speak
As just white noise
I’m beginning to notice
That attention is my poison
And when it’s out of my system
I want more
